PLC (Programmable Logic Controller)

In the most basic terms, a programmable logic controller (PLC) is an industrial computer that controls automation machines or process control systems. It has a robust construction and unique functional features such as sequential control, ease of programming, timers and counters, easy-to-use hardware and reliable controlling capabilities. It is designed to withstand harsh industrial environments such as extreme temperatures, vibrations, humidity, and electrical noise. The PLC controller can control and monitor a very large number of sensors, actuators and extensive I/O (input/output) arrangements.

How PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) work

Each PLC system has three modules namely: CPU, power supply module and one or more input/output (I/O) modules.

	CPU Module (Controller)
This module is comprised of a central processor and its memory component. This processor performs all the needed data computations and processing by receiving inputs and producing corresponding outputs.
	Power Supply Module
It receives AC or DC input and supplies 5V DC to the backplane of the chassis for use by the controller and all I/O modules within the PLC chassis. This is essentially the module responsible for powering up the system.
	I/O Modules
The input/output modules are responsible for connecting sensors and actuators to the PLC system to sense the different parameters such as pressure, temperature, and flow. The I/O modules can be digital or analogue.

Importance of ControlLogix 5000 Training

Today's manufacturing and automation systems often rely on complex processes working together for a symphony of common goals. This could include multiple units or programs from various sources that need to communicate and function at specific levels of efficiency in order to reach targeted guidelines.

This can be a significant problem for companies as they grow and scale their operations. Whenever a problem pops up at one juncture, it creates a cascading effect that can drastically slow down a business's days, weeks, or even months of progress.

PLC (programmable logic controller) training offers a way to ensure these problems are quickly addressed so that everything within a system is operating correctly. The ControlLogix 5000 is one of the more powerful industry tools that offers an easy-to-use interface with symbolic programming and structures to easily monitor, alert, repair, and create solutions to any issues that may arise.

Industry-Wide Industrial Automation

Allen Bradley PLCs are some of the most widely used software in the world. When you, or your team, takes the time to get trained on these systems, they are better able to collaborate with fellow PLC technicians from around the world. This creates vast competitive advantages for businesses seeking to grow or build cross-functional teams from other locations.

As manufacturing costs vary wildly and often have to interact with international suppliers and teams, getting experience with the ControlLogix 5000 is vital to company growth. This could include a wide range of potential candidates for advanced training like:

	Mechanical Engineering Students
	Electro-Mechanical Engineering Students
	Electrical Engineering Students
	Controls Engineering students
	Maintenance Technicians
	Controls Panel Technician
	Electrical Designer
	HVAC Technician
	Robotics Engineer
	Power Engineering Student
	Computer hardware engineer
	Automation Technician
	And more!

With this training, you'll be exposed to everything from running simulator scenarios to ensuring the ControlLogix 5000 has the correct firmware installed or flashed. The goal will be to have fully trained technicians capable of actively monitoring a facility to minimize downtime while building new efficiencies for future scalability.

Why ControlLogix 5000 is so Valuable

Then there is the consideration of the industrial environment. PLCs, in general, are designed to be a bit more rugged than other computes or tools that would be found in a data center or home business use. This is because they must be able to hold up well in an environment with frequent automation moving around it in the physical space.

Considering many of the actions controlled by a PLC include running a conveyer belt, temperature variations, alarm status, and other critical systems, these are essential things your business wants to operate at its best. You wouldn't want a basic PC from Best Buy to be managing your automation needs.

That is why the ControlLogix 5000 system is so essential to manufacturing and automation industries. Getting your team updated on the latest developments, software, integrations, and benefits of this system is not only a good investment of your financial resources but also a proactive step to lowering the risk of your day-to-day operations.

Uses for PLC

Uses for PLC

What can Programmable Logic Controllers be used for? There are many industries where precision and efficiency are of high importance. PLC's control the mechanization of certain production processes. Assembly lines, robotic devices, quality control parameters, to name a few, PLCs provide reliable and high level operating power to a plethora of systems and processes.

We here at Control Logic Training are here to train you in the Allen Bradley ControlLogix5000 PLC system. Our comprehensive classes teach you about the technology you are soon to be using. The automation of many different industries was possible in part due to the addition of programmable logic controls. They reduce human error while increasing the efficiency and reliability of machines used. Here are a few of the industries in which PLCs are primarily employed.

Main industries:

Automobile manufacturing

This is where PLC's got their first big start. Odo Josef Struger, an Austrian engineer, has been coined a father of the PLC and helped Allen-Bradely with the development of the technology. After its development, a few years later it was first adapted to replace an outdated relay system in the automotive industry.

Product assembly

Filing orders with the proper quantities and items used to be done manually. A tedious process which required many hands now can be done instantaneously and without the possibility of human error. PLCs have sped up production capabilities in most hard good industries.

Food assembly lines

When producing food in large quantities, quality control is important. Too much or too little of something can lead to an entire batch being spoiled and/or wasted. With the use of PLCs, exact quantities, mix times, cook times, etc can be programmed and executed with ease.

At home

There are civil applications for PLCs as well. At home in our washing machines the wash, rinse, and spin times are all controlled by a programmable logic controller. When commuting, streetlights turn on in the evening thanks to PLCs, and stop lights also can be controlled this way.

PLCs are everywhere nowadays. Within these industries they have allowed for more efficiency and uniformity. Looking to bring a PLC into your workplace? Take one of our incredible lessons and learn how exactly PLC's work and can benefit you.

The 5 Most Common PLC Programming Languages

If you are just starting out in PLC programming you may be introduced to a plethora of PLC programming languages. Learning the most popular PLC programming languages is a great place to start. Control Logic Training will introduce you to the five most common PLC programming languages so you can get started on your PLC programming journey!

Structured Texts

The first most commonly used PLC programming language is Structured Text. This programming language works by entering in lines of code to the PLC to create the desired outputs. This programming language can be easier to learn for those who are transitioning over from software engineering. The main advantage of using Structured Text is that it is easily translated between platforms. Your data will look similar on both hardware and software platforms making it easier to read and transfer information.

Sequential Function Charts

Sequential Function Charts are great for processes that are done in a sequence. On the other hand, this form of PLC programming language has a difficult time transferring to a process that is not done in a sequence. It is because of this that Sequential Function Charts can be limited in regards to what types of processing they can be used for. This PLC programming language can also be used alongside Structured Text if you are needed to used more advanced logic for your project!

Ladder Logic Diagrams

Ladder Logic programming is one of the first PLC programming languages and is still a commonly used PLC programming language today. It is the most used PLC programming language in the world. Ladder Logic resembles the layout of a ladder as well as relay-based circuits. This form of PLC programming language is easy to troubleshoot and modify. If you are just starting out in PLC programming Ladder Logic is a great PLC programming language to start with!

Function Block Diagrams

Function Block Diagrams allow for a visual representation of what you are working with. This form of PLC programming language is best for complex programming structures. Function Block Diagrams are user friendly and come naturally to most programmers. Using a drag-and-drop method makes recreation of an arrangement a breeze!

Instruction Lists

Instruction Lists have similar qualities to Structured Text and Ladder Logic. Each line on an Instruction List clearly states the conditions and outcomes in a program. Since this form of PLC programming language mandates the user to break down every instruction that needs to occur, it is very easy to read and work with. Although Instruction Lists are very clear and easy to work with they are not commonly seen in the programming world.

If you are transitioning over from a similar field or completely new to PLC programming, Control Logic Training has got your back! We have multiple classes that we offer to help you improve your PLC programming skills. Whether you are just starting out, at an intermediate level, or very knowledgeable about programmable logic controllers, we can help you grow even further in your skill sets! Contact Control Logic Training today to talk to our experts about what class is right for you!

Control Logic Training Talks About The History Of PLCs

You may have heard of PLC or Programmable Logic Controllers before. So what are they? PLCs are small computers that are used to automate pre-programmed controls. PLCs are commonly used in factories to operate lights, fans, pumps, circuits, and machinery. However, PLCs can also be found in everyday appliances such as a washing or vending machine. Let's take a look at the history of PLCs to get a better understanding of why they are so important in keeping our machines operating smoothly.

Establishment

Before PLCs, industrial automation was accomplished through complex electromagnetic relay circuits. In order to keep a factory running in the 1900s, this form of automation needed to take up a lot of space and took hours to troubleshoot problems. The first programmable logic controller came onto the scene in 1968. The goal was to make it easier for plant engineers and technicians who had been working with relay logic to program and work with the factory controls.

Limited Space

The first PLCs that were enacted into factories and plants were limited on memory space and were slower in speed. Nonetheless, this new and improved, simplified design saved a lot of time and effort for those operating them. Much like how other technologies have rapidly evolved over the past 50 years, the same happened for PLCs. The efficiency of PLCs quickly increased in the coming years, memory space and speed along with it.

The Foundation

Let's breakdown PLCs a bit more and take a look at their foundation. The three main components of PLCs are the processors, inputs, and outputs. First the PLCs take information from the inputs, perform logic or the programmed operations on the inputs in the central processing unit (CPUs), and create output reactions based on the programmed controls.

The Future

The future of PLCs and PLC programming is bright. Many factories, plants, and everyday machines continue to use forms of PLC programming in their day to day operatoins. As technology continues to evolve, PLCs continue to improve their efficiency with faster responses, more memory space than ever, and easier and more accessible programming. The 21st century is a great time to become a PLC programmer!

Do you think that you could be a PLC programmer? Control Logic Training offers classes for any level of knowledge and skill in Las Vegas! Whether you are a beginner or intermediate in your knowledge of PLCs, we can help you learn what you need to know in order to make PLC programming your new career! Contact Control Logic Training today to get more information about our programs, affordable prices, and what your next step should be in becoming a PLC programmer!

Tom's Teaching Abilities: Tom and I worked together for about a decade. He taught me almost all of the PLC knowledge that I have today. Now my company (as well as my co-workers) consider me a reputable source for troubleshooting and solving PLC (and electrical) related problems. Tom is 'The Man'.
